Macedonian God with snake body and human head, related to fertility and protection against the plague.
This Roman marble statue, from 2nd century, was found during an excavation in Constanța, Romania.
I saw this sculpture in an exhibition, I was impressed! and I was able to take photos, so I decided to try my own photogrammetry model :D
I use to work with 3D models made with this technique, fixing and optimizing them, but I had never tried doing the whole process, from the photos to the model.
In this process I have learned many things, some of them I knew from theory, but I had never put it into practice before, and other questions I discovered doing the 3D model. Things about bad practices, but this is a personal model, so I decided to go ahead with it.
To list a few considerations:
· Neutral lighting is very important. In a museum, dramatic lighting is beautiful but creates confusing volumes in photogrammetry.
· The photographs. The quality, quantity, the focus and not leaving unrecorded partes are essential. It’s made with my own smartphone, which although it takes very acceptable photos and the quality is not optimal, and my Google Pixel is already 4 years old! and also, due to my shyness or nervousness, I didn't take enough photos, I needed to reconstruct too much by hand, not being able to guarantee the accuracy of volume or detail. And this is not good in case of a reliable reconstruction.
· Due to the lack of material, especially in the interior of the snake body, I have had to sculpt too much, and it has been frustrating at many moments (I prefer to model my own sculptures, right? haha).
· I should have done some tests before, working on simpler photogrammetry models with controlled light and better camera. This one, although it's made of stone, has very complicated volumes and shape.
And the most important thing! Thank you Javi for teaching, helping me and giving me ideas :) <3
