Days ago I visited the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid (Spain) and I saw the "Dialogues of Iberian Sculpture" exhibition. I loved the opportunity to see many fascinating Iberian sculptures and one of them caught my eye: the Sphinx of Agost (actually one of them! This one is in the Louvre Museum, but it was found in Alicante, Spain).
Many sphinxes inspired by Greek or other Mediterranean and Eastern regions, are esprending their wings, like the famous Sphinx of Naxos. But this one had the wings folded, in a beautiful and simple pose. The asymmetrical carving of its wings and back deeply impressed me. In short, I loved the sculpture and I found it very inspiring ๐
I took some photos and decided to try the traditional archaeological drawing style! It was a fun experience! following references from the same context and other reconstructions l made an hypothesis, how the sphinx might looked like in the 6th century BC (I did this whithout ambition or pretensions! It's just practice and joy! ๐).
Then, I continued with a simple illustration, bringing the sphinx into my own style -I've dedicated more time and care than I initially expected! ๐ -
I hope you like this little project! ๐งก
